First, if he sold you the computer, I hope he gave you his copy of WinXP or you won't be able to do the following:

You really need to re-install everything. Strip it back to the walls and rebuild.
- format the drive
- reinstall XP
- reinstall all apps

The problem you are having is that your friend set his account up as the administrator and his children as users so that they couldn't install anything! Not a bad strategy, actually. I know lots of people who do the same thing.

If you can get his admin USERID and PASSWORD, you can administer the accounts through the Control Panel.

- log on with his original Admin account
- create a new Admin account
- log on with the new Admin account
- delete all other accounts (obviously, you can't do that if you don't have an Admin account)
- you can do other cleanup manually by removing any unnecessary entries in the "Documents and Settings" folder (CAREFUL! Only remove folders you are sure of!)

I suggest the longer route of reinstalling everything, just to make this your computer, but Microsoft might not let you because of licensing issues.
