Microsoft also has to leave some things for others to do. It makes sense for
efficiency reasons and for anti-trust reasons.

In a perfect world there might not be any applications, only media/content
to buy, and the one simple interface would handle everything in a perfectly
well integrated fashion. But there is a slim chance of the competition ever
allowing that to happen, whether it is good for the customer or not. In my
world only professionals would have to install professional level products.
Your off-the-shelf PC would perform every mainstream function a consumer
would want, without the user really being aware that they are launching
separate applications. It would be more task oriented, and update itself as
new functions became mainstream.

Something close to it has to happen if 100% of the citizenry is ever
expected to use computers. In a way, a web browser is fulfilling this role
now. People are able to do quite a few functions over the web, but the
experience at each web-site is very different. Some are good and some are a
mess of pop-up windows and non-intuitive forms.
