The shutdown seems conspicuous. As you note, I would expect an
application fault to crash the computer with less grace than you're
experiencing.

I would ensure that you don't have any viruses running on there, the
latest batch (over the last year) forced your machine into a shutdown
sequence by overloading the RPC service. Or, if you have friends like
mine they might be messing with you (unlikely, but I have evil friends).

Since you mentioned that this primarily happens with MCE running, let's
look into some other specifice issues that might be causing it:
- Heat? Some tuners run hot, maybe your computer has a shutdown
sequence when it detects overheating inside the case?
- Hard drive? Lots of IO activity with both MCE and defrag, but I am
unaware of anything there that would initiate a shutdown.
- Power settings? Maybe your computer is measuring your activity level
by mouse or keyboard input. Sitting there and watching a show or
defrage without any actual input may be causing it to trigger a standby
sequence. Check your power settings. Also check to see if you have
maybe a bad screensaver running that is causing these issues.

None of these are answers, but maybe they are new places to start.

It's most apt to do it when I'm using the transport controls but occasionally does it without warning. I receive no "blue screen of death" but rather the "shut down" sequence that one would see after hitting "shut down" or "restart."

Like most of you here, I simply don't have time to reinstall a bunch of apps everytime I encounter a problem. I've submitted my bugs to Microsoft and they haven't patched things up yet.

I can run Photoshop with tons of filters and processor intensive stuff until the cows come home. When its time to relax and watch a program or two....that's when all hell breaks loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
