I will second Bob's comments.

Sometimes the sound just randomly goes away on the recording, it's quite
frustrating. It hasn't been happening much since MCE 2004, but it does
indeed happen. Big adoption killer in my household unfortunately.

Here's what I've discovered so far:
- it seems to be worse if you have other "capture" devices in your system
that use audio. A webcam, a microphone, a digital video camera. I would
almost always lost TV sound when I had a webcam session. Now, I simply
don't do that any more.
- it seems more likely to occur after a "wake from standby"

Make sure you have all of the updates (which you did), and you might want to
visit the webpage of the sound card manufacturer to see if there are any
newer driver packages. In particular, Creative had a few things on their
web site that did not appear on windowsupdate.

Cheers,
Pete
