analog gunslingers

Gentleman,

The quality of the tech advice found here reveals that
you MVP's not only have the right stuff, but that you've
also been to the front, and that, since you like to help
people who've gotten themselves pranged, you might
consider the following request...

First; a little background:

For two years I worked with our state's number one home
theater and housewide-entertainment dealer. As you may
know, these guys (and other home builder participants)
are running flat out installing "future proof" wiring
designs in new homes. However, despite my admonitions to
get out on point in the emerging home networking market,
these guys want to believe that proprietary analog
platforms from companies like Niles, Escient, Russound,
etc.. will prevail against MSFT (they forget what $50
billion in cash can buy.)

I consider it a breach of good faith on the part of the
builders, electricians and A/V installers who continue
installing structured wiring that ignores topographies
that were proven in the corporate market a decade ago,
and that will obviusly play a part in the home.

Yes, I know wireless is going to solve everyone's problem
in dealing with the good-old-stick-frame-boys, but I've
seen enough performance vs promises nightmares to
think... "Maybe we'll go ahead and pull some wire to this
room after all, just to be safe y'know."

Now we all know that entertainment is the killer
application that will finally drive the convergence
paradigm and open up the home market for networking. And
we all know that exponential flat-panel sales to end-uers
who don't know that "it's not a TV" is exactly the same
thing as all those IMB-PC early adopters who weren't
aware that there is more to owning a PC than creating
directories and formatting floppies. Well, Typing Tutor
was pretty cool.

So you guys who know where MCE is and where it's headed
are the equivalent of Mitch Kapor and the Lotus 1-2-3
team getting ready to light the rocket.

SO, FINALLY! What I'm asking for is your guidance in
divining what the the higher probability distributed
entertainment network will look like, and which analog
CES devices will remain viable as legacy pieces. Too many
people are shelling out big bucks on short-odds analog
switching gear that is accessible only through IR.

Where do residential gateway devices fit in? How do you
wire up a house to be prepared for tablet PCs and
wireless thin clients? Will thin clients dock in the wall
for recharging and/or touch-pad control?
DVI/Firewire/USB? Why don't HP's media PCs include a DVI
out? Etcetera..etecetra...

Can you guys help with this? Does MSFT have an inside
loop that consultants/authors can join? Are there certain
contacts, resources or journals I should follow up with?

Thanks for taking time to consider this. Many thanks.
