Re: OE launches Identity login on boot-up

...What's odd is we use passwords on my other 2 machines and this
doesn't happen.

1. Are the other machines made by the manufacturer of the mini?

2. Are the other machines running the NIS free-trial?

3. Does OE load at start-up on the other machines?

You have some choices to make:

Do you want to stop using password-protected identities on the new computer?

Would it be OK for all four (4) of your accounts to be running in one (1) identity?

Do you want to stop OE from loading at boot?

not sure what to carry on. Having the anti-spam and email scanning turned
off doesn't change the situation. If there is no fix for this, we can just
cancel the requirement for passwords for logging on to the different OE
identities. What's odd is we use passwords on my other 2 machines and this

Before
reading the rest of this reply, see if disabling Norton AntiSpam has any
effect on the behavior of the default, password-protected identity,
Homer.

...I guess we don't necessarily need password
protection. I guess it was just an extension of requirements by my ISP.
when we set up our mail accounts with our ISP, psswords were required,
we
just did the same thing when we set up OE.

Assuming your wife knows the passwords for all identities, I'd forego
password-protected identities entirely...assuming (1) you don't mind your
wife being able to access (read) your personal and business mail and (2)
she doesn't mind you being able to access hers.

Otherwise, we can just disable OE from loading at boot.

PS: Understand that you COULD use one (1) identity and use Message Rules
to
filter incoming messages to separate folders. For example, you could
have
messages sent to your "main account" going to Inbox folder, messages sent
to your business account go to a user-created folder named Business,
messages sent to your personal account go to a user-created folder named
Homer, and messages sent to your wife's account go to a user-created
folder named Mrs. Homer. In this set-up, you will have only (1) Sent
Messages folder and one (1) Deleted Items folder.

We'll discuss the NIS upgrade in the next go-round.

well I added the password back to one of my identities (not main) and

we
just did the same thing when we set up OE. The reason we have 4
identities,
let's see: our ISP requires a main account. I didn't want to use it to
send and receive email. I have a small business and I created another,
I
have my personal account and so does my wife.

I never configured (at least knowingly) OE to launch at startup, it just
happened.

"PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote:
Very good.

1. Now open OE File | Identities | Manage identities.

2a. Enable password-protection for only one (1) identity, preferably
NOT
the "Main Identity."

2b. Now select the same password-protected identity in each of the two
boxes below and check the "Use this identity when..." box.

4. Close OE and reboot.

5. Do you see the original behavior ("When I boot up the mini, the OE
identity Login box appears minimuzed on the task bar. When I open it
and
select the ID and enter the password, nothing happens.") now?

QUESTIONS:

1. Why do you have four (4) identities? Does everyone in the family
use
the computer and each identity is used by a separate family member?

2. Is there any particular reason that the mini is configured to load
OE
at
startup?

(We'll get to the Norton stuff in a later post, I haven't forgotten
about
it.)

So there are *four* identities? Did you import (the same) IAF and
CSV
data
into each one of them?

If the odd behavior happens when you attempt to open every identity,
yes,
disable password-protection in each of them.

the NIS trial is for 30 days.

On what date does the free-trial expire? Do you have a
three-machine/user
licence for NIS 2009?

NB: I would NOT recommend directly upgrading from the free-trial to
your
purchased NIS 2009! More on this later.

I understand how to remove the password protection, but the only
time
the
minimized ID login dialog box appears is when the machine is booted
up.

OK but we want to see if the same thing happens after you've disabled
password-protection.

the NIS trial is for 30 days. My intention is to purchase a year's
subscription. I use NIS on my other 2 machines.

I have not downloaed IE8 on any of my machines and it was not loaded
on
my
new one.

I have had email scanning turned off from day one.

I understand how to remove the password protection, but the only
time
the

"PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote:

Question: How long does the NIS free-trial/subscription last (e.g.,
60
days; 1 year)?

Let's see if removing the password-protection allows OE to start
without
problems. If you want, we can re-enable password-proctection
later.

1. Open OE then click on File | Identities | Manage identities.

2. Select/highlight the identity then click on the Properties
button.

3. Now uncheck "the Require a password" box & OK your way out.

4. Close OE then reopen it: Any problems?

[Don't re-enable password protection just yet, please.]

5. Again, click on File | Identities | Manage identities: Is your
identity
named "Main Identity"? [yes/no]

Tip: Disable the email scanning component of Norton AntiVirus. It
provides
no additional protection, it can cause all sorts of problems, and
even
Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against
viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus
Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive,
including
email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top
of
this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum
protection,
keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure
that
you
have the most recent virus definitions.

Tip: If you've not done so already or if it wasn't already
installed
when
you purchased the netbook, I'd recommend that you do NOT install
IE8,
especially with NIS installed! We can discuss this (and purchasing
NIS)
later.

1a: I am running NIS on the new machine. I can't find out if it

It is version 16.0

1b: yes, it did come preinstalled as a trial. My intention is to
purchase.

2: yes

"PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote:

1a. You were running Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2009 on your
old
WinXP
computer: Are you running NIS 2009 on the new one, too? If not,
what
is
the name of the Norton application?

1b. Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the
new
computer
when you bought it?

2. Have any email messages been downloaded into OE on the new
computer
yet?
[yes/no]

Recap: The problem is not the fact that your identity is
password-protected
but the fact that accessing the identity isn't working the way it
should.

Moving
on,
please answer these questions by number:

1a. What data did you export to a CSV file (e.g., your Address

contacts; your messages)?

address book

1b. How did you import the CSV file (e.g., OE File | Import |
Other
address
book; Address Book File | Import | Other address book)?

I followed the steps you've listed

2. Did you import any messages from the old identity? [yes/no]

no

3. Did you only encounter the password prompt after you'd
imported
the
IAF
and CSV files? [yes/no]

sorry, I'm not sure when that happened

4. IN RE the identity used on the old computer from which you
exported
the
data: Was this identity password-protected? [yes/no]
