I also had this problem -- on the play control (volume), the MIDI Synth could
be moved to a higher volume, but then would go right back to no volume so I
would have to manually change it in each email, just as Steve Cochran
suggested. Then I figured out what was causing this change -- my driver
needed an update! Here's how I did it:
Click Start / Control Panel / System.
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. Click on Sound, video and game
controllers. Click on the device you need to "fix" -- my volume was
controlled by Creative SB Audigy (WDM). Click on the Drive tab, then "Update
Driver". Once it finds and updates it, you will need to reboot your computer.
That solved my problem!

Source tab. Then find the <BGSOUND tag and change the volume from
volume=-9640 to volume=0. That will then un-mute the sound. As the others
indicated, to change that for all new messages, you have to figure out which
component in your sound devices has been muted and then you won't have to do
that for every message then.
