You're welcome.
You are OK with SP2 for now, but there is a cutoff date for further patches. I honestly do not remember when at the moment, but I am sure it is at least a few months in the future.
If it were me, I would relax for a few days and when you have the time, give SP3 another shot. Save the installation tips I provided. You can drag that particular post to an OE local folder for future reference.
Meanwhile, glad to here you're up and running.

Bruce,
Thanks for the help - I am back up. Since I had not had any problems with
Trendmicro at all before the current issue, I was hesitant to put the blame
there. But I checked it out anyway. I first shut off the email scanning (no
help) and then disabled it entirely with no joy. So I uninstalled SP3,
rebooted and Outlook Express 6 now runs again, even with Trendmicro going.
So maybe I had a bad install of SP3. Or maybe SP3 doesn't like the Outlook
Express/Trendmicro combination. I like what I have now so why should I try
to reinstall Sp3 again. What does it buy me? I hate to trade off a
perfectly running configuration that I like for some marginal gains in areas
that I don't need or use. What are your thoughts?
Thanks again,
Jerry

Not even close to the other thread with Preview Pane issues. Thank you for
starting your own.
There are known issues with the latest versions of TrendMicro. Turn off
e-mail scanning first and see if that helps. (You may need to remove your AV
and reinstall in custom mode, unchecking e-mail scanning when you see that
option.
The next step would be removing TrendMicro entirely.
If still no joy, remove SP3. Does the problem still persist? If it does, it
wasn't SP3, but a coincidence. If the problem is resolved, you may have had
a bad install of SP3.
If SP3 was downloaded with an anti-virus, or anti-spyware, program running,
you may have a bad installation.

* If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system
files from being changed, SP3 installation might fail. Try temporarily
disabling your antivirus software. You can usually do this by right-clicking
your antivirus program icon (which typically appears in the bottom
right-hand corner of the computer screen) and clicking Disable.
* If you disable your antivirus software before you install the service
pack, be sure that you are aware of the risks involved, and be sure to
enable it after the service pack is installed.
Remove SP3 via Add/Remove Programs, reboot and download and install it
again. Before you do, turn off your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs
such as Windows Defender. If you use a third party firewall, disable it and
turn on the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for the installation. Once
SP3 is in and working, you can enable the third party firewall and turn of
the Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.
