Re: Service Pack 3 and Compacting Message

Millions of users may not have encountered this behavior, but I have,
numerous people on this site have, and you've provided a list of potentially
conflicting things that may cause this problem, including the most widely
used anti-virus app - Norton. That hardly makes MS look good.

Now that I have that off my chest, does anyone have a solution instead of a
lecture?

See this recent discussion about the problem:

For reference, here's a list of things which are known to cause this
behavior:

• Various & sundry anti-virus applications (including Norton)
• Various & sundry anti-spyware applications
• Various & sundry third-party firewalls
• Any/all of the above running when SP3 was installed
• IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
• Nero plug-in(s)
• Windows Desktop Search
• Windows Live Mail
• Disk defragmentation
• MailWasher

Millions of OE users have installed SP3 without encountering this behavior
after doing so. I know kos I'm one of them and I've installed SP3 on over a
dozen machines.

Not that MS will be interested but...

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

anyone know of a solution?
