images created from keyboard characters

in the past i've received emails with 'signature files' that are
composed
of punctuation marks, etc., that create a simple graphic image. i'm
not
sure what these are called--sort of elaborate emoticons or something.
anyway, is there some kind of site where these images are displayed,
including instructions on how to make them?

thanks in advance.
