Thanks, Bruce, for confirming I'm not nuts...well, at least where this is
concerned.
I'll recheck my settings just to be sure in my own mind, and I've turned off
the AV outgoing scan permanently. Still no go. Modem is internal, but I
think you mean to unplug/plug the phone line into the back of the 'puter.
(I'm on dial-up.)
I've looked at so many of MSN's troubleshooting messages, I'm not sure what
I've read. I'll check out the one you've referenced.
I know from past experience that its useless to contact MSN support. Guess
I just needed to raise my blood pressure about 30 points for some reason!

probably is an MSN issue. They wouldn't admit to it any more than most ISPs.
See if your settings are as follows:
1. On the Servers Tab,
a. Change the Incoming mail (POP3) and Outgoing mail (SMTP) settings
to:
i. Incoming mail FROM pop3.email.msn.com TO pop3.live.com
ii. Outgoing mail FROM smtp.email.msn.com TO smtp.live.com
b. Uncheck the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" box
c. Ensure your full e-mail address is included under "Account Name"
e.g. MSN_User@xxxxxxx
2. On the Advanced Tab,
a. Change the port number for Incoming Mail (POP3) from 110 to 995
b. Check both the boxes that indicates
"This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
