Thanks. Can more filtering be done with the Windows Mail Client?

Windows Mail client. That could mean 2 different programs. Windows Mail (WM) is the replacement for Outlook Express on Windows Vista. That is, there is no OE in Vista but instead Windows Mail. Then there is the Windows Live Mail (WLM) client which will be OE's replacement on all versions of Windows (although I have some strong dislikes of how it organizes the items in files and folders on the hard drive instead of within a database).

I don't have Windows Vista so I can't tell you what Windows Mail on it is like. I have trialed Windows Live Mail and found it lacking in security and too flaky. Although released, I consider Windows Live Mail to still be a beta program. You can find folks discussing it under the microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop group (WLM used to be Windows Live Mail Desktop but the "Desktop" got dropped yet the newsgroup remains).

I don't recall that WLM could do anything more than what Outlook Express could do except for maybe a couple extra actions or test clauses in the rules but nothing that would help you do additional filtering in newsgroups than what Outlook Express already provides.

Microsoft doesn't let you test on many headers in OE, WM, or WLM. Also, not all headers are available in the overview.fmt file. This is the file that your NNTP client queries to check what headers are available when it polls for new posts (but before downloading the bodies). Not many overview headers are available which means you can't test on many of them, but often more headers are available in the OVER command than what OE lets you test on. To see what headers are available during a poll for new posts, do the following (the example shows how I do it using Microsoft's NNTP server):

telnet msnews.microsoft.com 119
list overview.fmt
quit

You will see the headers that you can test on DURING the download of a post. Subject, From, Date, Message-ID, References, Bytes, Lines, and Xref are all that you can test on DURING the message pull. So, for example, the test that I have in NewsProxy to drop posts from posters where the Path header contains "mail2news" won't work because the Path header isn't available in the OVER command. The OVER command returns the contents of all the fields in the database for an article specified by message-id, or from a specified article or range of articles in the currently selected newsgroup. But if the header isn't listed in the overview.fmt file then it won't be offered when OVER is ran against a particular message or range of them. These are the headers that the NNTP client can retrieve for a particular message without having to actually download that message. That means your NNTP client could test for strings in those headers and decide whether or not to even download that message. Any NNTP client that checks all headers after downloading the post has to waste time, bandwidth, and quota consumption to get the post before it can test on any headers not included in the overview.fmt file. http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/nntp/rfcs/rfc3977.txt, section 8.3.3, page 77 gives some examples of using the OVER command, if supported by the NNTP server.

Some NNTP clients let you test on other headers than what are included in the overview.fmt list but they have to retrieve the post before they can do that testing. If the header is one of those in the overview.fmt file then the NNTP client can test on their values before wasting time downloading the post. OE is not even smart enough to let you test on all what headers are available as listed in the overview.fmt file. I sincerely doubt WM or WLM are any better at it.
