1. The location pasted into "run" leads to
380493AA-D26E-4F11-968F-6EA19CD3F4F5
i.e. C:\Docs & Settings\David\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\
{380493AA-D26E-4F11-968F-6EA19CD3F4F5}
But there is another store also at that location,
{1302F441-D057-4C18-851C-5DDB1C1A68E2}which presumably relates to a new
identity
created when I recently changed ISPs. I was sure that there was no hyphen
after 968F when I copied the location, characters one at a time following
the curser and pasted into search for file.

2. There are no bak files/folders in the store
{380493AA-D26E-4F11-968F-6EA19CD3F4F5} above; the files/folders that are
there are all dbx. Some are duplicate names but with a (1) between the name
and .dbx. The (1) version is a later date by about a week and smaller in
size.
Additionally there are 8 other "account" files in this store with details eg
:
Name:
account{1BC1C22E-D9C3-4E14-8E6A-36B5169EF954}.oeaccount.WhoWhere.oemigaccount
Size: 2KB Type: OEMIGACCOUNTFILE all dated 15/03/2008 15:36.
The total number of dbx files/folders are almost 400. There are some that
are named "a.dbx" and "b.dbx" and "bs.dbx" and "c.dbx" and "d.dbx" and
"ds.dbx" and "d.dbx" and "ds.dbx" and "f.dbx" and "fs.dbx" . These latter
files with either a single letter from "a" to "f" or with single letter and
"s" do not identify anything to me.

3. I have restored from the Recycle Bin all the bak files/folders to the
store {380493AA-D26E-4F11-968F-6EA19CD3F4F5}and they appear in the Maximised
store folder. Most of the folders as far as I can see appear in the Outlook
Express list of Folders now
and generally have the content restored. Where not so, I can do without.
When opening OE it is slow to
open all panes.

Assuming you have enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders, go to Tools |
Options | Maintenance | Store Folder. Copy the location and Paste it into
Start | Run. Where does this take you? You should be in your current
message store.

Refresh us. What folders are missing or have missing mail? Is there a
corresponding bak file here? Drag the dbx file out of the message store
/first/ and then rename the bak file to dbx.

If there is no bak file in the store folder, minimize this an open the
Recycle Bin and Restore the corresponding bak file. Maximize the store
folder. Is the bak file there?

I did all that was idicated and advised in post but still have OE Folders
as .bak files, all
remaining in my Recycle Bin. Although opening new folders where
necessary
in OE, no emails appear in the new folders when opening OE.

I did notice a discrepancy in the Store Folder name:
a. In OE>Tools>Options>Maint it shows the location of the store as

But in the Windows Explorer directory the Store Folder is shown as:

i.e. after the 968F there is a "-" in Para b. Which one is correct?
Should I change anything? The file listed in Par a. cannot be found

I noticed in an earlier thread, Ron Sommer mentioned "that a new Identity
is
needed" ? Is it possible to search for and delete all previous
identities,
open a new identity and move the .bak folders from the Recycle Bin into
OE?
This would surely clean the system out and start from scratch?

I have Outlook installed but do not use it as there are more bells and
whistles than I need, but is it less prone to compacting errors.

When you compact, a copy of your dbx files are sent to the Recycle Bin
in
the event that something should go wrong and messages, or entire
folders,
are lost when you are compacting. If your power even has a slight
surge,
the compacting is interrupted and you will lose mail.

You can restore a bak file to replace the missing one as follows. You
say
there are two, so if you right click on each one in the Recycle Bin |
Properties, you can see the date it was deleted . The most recent is
the
one you will want. Please follow these steps in order.

In WinXP, the dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these
files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and
Folders
under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows
Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing, or empty,
folder and drag it to the Desktop. It can be deleted later once you
have
successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the Message Store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the *exact*
same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. Eg:
If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named Saved. Open
the
new folder and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty,
continue on to the next step.

First, check if there is a bak file already in the message store. If
there is, and you removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it to dbx.

If it isn't already in the message store, open the Recycle bin and
right
click on the bak file for the folder in question and click Restore.
Open
the message store back up and change the file extension from .bak to
.dbx. Close the message store and open OE. The messages should now be
back in the folder.

If the messages are successfully restored, you can go ahead and delete
the old dbx file that you moved to the Desktop.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and
move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user
created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is
feasible.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and
receiving,
and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting
changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your
up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For

I noticed in an earlier post you emphasised the need to not touch
anything while compacting was taking place, additionally that one
should have either Local Folders selected or Outlook Express both at
the top of the tree.

I have generally let OE come up and advise compact is needed and then
let it do its own thing, without touching anything! Whether or not
this next situation is involved I am not sure, except recently after
such a compacting, my inbox has become empty. When I look in my
Recycle Bin there are two Inboxes (Bak) and there is a Bak copy of
each
of my extensive mail folders as well? These mail folders in OE are
all intact. I have read your response in online IE Newsgroups

at 10:10AM PST on a similar situation but am confused as to how to
proceed. As far as I can see, I just need to restore one of the two
Inboxes and think I can identify which one, due to the size
differences. How to do it?

Another odd thing, my Newsgroups in OE all disappeared and I had to
reinstall them!

Never seemed to have these problems with earlier versions of OE up to
OE5.

The two most common reasons for what you describe is disruption of
