Thanks very much Frank and Bruce, it worked and the folder/messages are back
where they belong.
Lesson learned, never interrupt a compacting process, and I think I may go
for manually compacting instead
Thanks again guys for your very prompt and detailed guidance.

Hi,
yes, I believe OE was closed, since I followed the step-by-step
instructions.
And yes I can understand this starts to sound confusing to everyone
(including myself).
Point is, I have sitting in my message store a meaty (181,711KB) .dbx
folder which I believe contains the messages I need to get back in OE.
This folder, I believe, used to be sitting in the recycle bin as a .bak
and was subsequently restored.
How do I get the contents of this folder back into OE from the message
store.
Is there still a solution ?
1. Open OE.
2. Create an new folder in OE named QFrank.
3. Close OE.
4. Use Windows Explorer the delete QFrank.dbx from the message store.
5. Rename this mysterious 181,771KB folder to QFrank.dbx
6. Open OE and look in the folder QFrank.
If your messages are not there, Move QFrank.dbx to an empty Windows folder
and use one of the following tools to attempt to extract the messages. If
DBXpress doesn't extract them then you're never going to get the messages
out of the file.
DBXtract ($7): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
There is also a free alternative to DBXtract, though not for DBXpress:

DBXpress: ($25) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
