Re: untrue error message when sending an email

For the immediate problem, your Outbox or Sent Items is probably corrupted. After you take care of that, get rid of Norton, and also never use e-mail scanning. Both are incompatible with Outlook Express. Here is my diatribe.

Do the following for the Outbox, and if the problem persists, repeat for Sent Items after you move any messages you wish to save to a local folder you create.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Outbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free).

In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.

Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.

Using OE6, XP Pro SP2 (updated weekly), Norton System Works (updated daily),
imap/smtp,

All of a sudden yesterday when I sent an email OE gave me the error dialogue
box that said it could not send the message because of the error listed
below. There was no error listed in the white box below. It handed it off
to Norton for scanning then it appeared in my outbox just as an unsent email
would. But it actually did send the email to the recipient. It re-sent it
every time I opened or closed OE until I deleted it from my outbox. I
checked Symantec and could not find a virus/worm that would be causing this.
Can anyone help me cure this problem?

Thanks

p.s. A couple of my friends are also having this problem.
