I am using OE 6, XP and SP2.
I came in this AM and OE no longer connecting . I deleted and
reestablished
MSN account in setup and it will now not download my folders on setup,
with error message:
An unknown error has occurred
This operation is not permitted for this type of client.
Configuration:
Account: MSN
Server: http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
It was all working fine when I left work on Friday.
I changed nothing over the weekend, perhaps MSFT downloaded some
improvements over the weekend?
I can still access my mail from the hotmail site, so the passwords are
still
good, and I'm not totally out of business for the day (other than being
able
to access email folders), but would appreciate an ideas or suggestions
from
those more knowledgeable than I.
Are you an MSN Premium or Hotmail Plus subscriber?I am afraid the problem has not fixed itself overnight.
I've only seen that error once before and it involved and MSN Premium
subscriber. It apparently & "automagically" cleared up on its own:

PS: Users of other MSN/Windows Live applications hosted on the same
servers
have seen similar, unusual issues since Saturday, 10 Nov-07, so it all
may
point to temporary problems on MSN's end.

I am not a premium service subscriber.
The fact that others are experiencing it is interesting, and would help
explain why OE access went away in Entourage on my macbook as well on
Saturday. Interestingly it did not disappear on my wife's laptop, but she
doesn't do automatic software updates (rarely updates at all!). So there
is
something awry at MSFT's end.
Anyway, I am still open for ideas, but I don't begin to know how to
contact
MSFT.
PA Bear, thank you for your response, if you should hear anything else I
would appreciate your input.
First of all, please confirm that it's a name@xxxxxxx account, not a
name@xxxxxxxxxxx account.
Also tell us if the name@xxxxxxx account is associated with an ISP (e.g.,
Qwest) and if any MSN software is also installed?
If you properly configure the account in a new OE identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity), does it work OK in it?
How does the machine connect (i.e., dial-up; DSL; cable; satellite). Is a
router involved? If so, does the machine connect wirelessly?

The account is format name@xxxxxxxx
installed, other than Office etc.
I deleted the account and then re-entered it with the same name and email
address as before. That's when all my email folders disappeared. (!!!!) I'm
not sure I know what is involved in establishing a new identity or email
address.
Machine connects via DSL. My ISP is fone.net, in conversation with them they
know of nothing at their end. However, they do use Qwest, I think.
I have a gateway for connection to the phone line, but the Windows machine
in question is hardwired to it (ethernet.)
