Re: Outlook Express Address Book does not load

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Everything is working now. I deleted the DWORD registry key, rebooted the
computer and was able to access the address book. Thanks for your help.

IOW, sharing of contacts with Outlook was NOT the cause of your problem,
DeeW. IOW, if you created the Registry key...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

....delete it. If the key was already there but didn't have the DWORD
UseOutlook, delete the DWORD entry.

Reboot.

Now review the KB articles Michael posted earlier in the thread to find the
cause of /your/ problem:

There was no DWORD registry entry until I created it. Orginally it was
set
to 0 (zero) and I changed it to 1 (one). Also, I when changed it to 1
(one)
and was able to access the address book, it was the same as the one in
Outlook. I did a search for the Windows Address Book (wab) and found it
under c:\document and settings\username\application
data\microsoft\addressbook\username.wa~. I changed the extension to .wab
and that is how I found the OE address book. When I imported the address
book in OE, it also added the entries into Outlook.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you may have. Thanks.

For reference:

<QP>
Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and
is its value set to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of
Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing
was
enabled will NOT be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.
</QP>

Please clarify:

Before you made any changes, was the value of the DWORD "UseOutlook" 1
(one) or 0 (zero)?

What is the value now?

...If I change the value to back of 0, I am unable to
access the address book.

You can't access the Address Book, the Address Book is empty or blank, or
autocompletion of addresses in an OE message doesn't work now?

Sorry, but I have another question that is related to this issue. I
noticed
that when I changed this setting, it causes the Outlook 2003 and OE6
address
books to be shared. If I change the value to back of 0, I am unable to
access the address book.

Is there a way to unrelate the two applications and still be able to
access
the OE6 address book.

You're welcome.

Be prepared to repeat this if you install any updates for MS Outlook
(not
Outlook Express) in the future.

I was able to figure it out by doing the following:

Click Start, point to Run, in the Open box type regedit, and then
click
OK.
Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wab\Wab4

In the right pane, double-click UseOutlook, and then change the value
from
0
to 1. Click OK, and the close the Registry Editor. I was able to
create
a
new message and access the address book and did not receive an error
message.

Thanks for your help.

What have I tried thus far:

Checked and the read-only check box was already clear for the *.wab
file

Removed Outlook Express 6.0, delete the registry entry indicated,
reinstalled Outlook Express. Open Outlook Express, clicked to create
a
new
message and it attempted to open, but after about 15 seconds, I
received
the error message that I initially reported.

Uninstalled Outlook Express 6.0. Attempted to rename the Outlook
Express
folder, but was unable to do so. Messages indicated that another
program
was using a file. I rebooted the computer, but was unsuccessul in
renaming the folder.

I am not using Outlook CW mode.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. This problem occured
about
4
weeks ago and Mozilla Thunderbird was installed as an alternative to
OE.
The only thing I really need is to get the addresses from the address
book. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

When I try to create an email message, I receive the following

When I click on the address book, I receive the following error:

What have you done so far to try to remedy the problem?
