This is a complicated tale. From the time I got connected to the internet
I
never had any email problems, other than spam. Then I had to install
Windows
Live Messenger because one of the forums I belong to switched from sending
email notices to alerts on Live Messenger. After that, every once in a
while,
when I clicked on a link in Outlook, it would freeze and I would have to
use
task manager to shut it down. I discovered that the way to fix it was to
go
to add/remove programs and do a repair on Windows Live Messenger (I don't
remember how I discovered this.) But this only fixes it for a week or two,
and then the same thing all over again.
So, one day I said to heck with this and downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird.
Every thing worked fine for about three days, and then no more mail.
Thunderbird reported that the server refused the connection. I tried
Outlook
and it reported...
"The host 'mail.beamspeed.net' could not be found. Please verify that you
have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.beamspeed.net'.
Server: 'mail.beamspeed.net'. Protocol SMTP. Port 25. Secure(SSL): No.
Socket
Error: 11004. Error Number: 0x800CCC0D."
... and the same message for POP3. Port: 110.
When I finally got hold of my ISP guy, he told me to change the servers to
'pop.beamspeed.net' and 'smpt.beamspeed.net', didn't work; Outlook said it
couldn't find the servers. So, the ISP guy's solution was to sign into
their
mail site and collect my mail, the problem was on my system, not theirs.
Rummaging around in Help and Support, it said I should go to a command
prompt, enter netstat -na, and I should see 0.0.0:25 LISTENING, and
0.0.0:110
LISTENING, but I didn't; there is a bunch of stuff listed, some LISTENING,
some ESTABLISHED, etc. but NO 0.0.0:25 or 0.0.0:110. So, something is
wrong
somewhere, but I haven't the foggiest notion how to fix it.
Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Outlook Express and
should be uninstalled.
