Folders.dbx can get screwed up all on its own and for many reasons. There really isn't anything you can do. It is the *brain* of the dbx files so it is very vulnerable. If there is an upside, it doesn't cause loss of messages when something like this happens.

switch off, switch on and try again. It used to be called 'hitting the big
red switch' - and if you know what that means you're as old as I am.

By the time I had read your latest post I had already suspected the fault
was with folders.dbx (it didn't have a .bak). I deleted it as you
suggested. On restarting Norton wanted to reconfigure (?Spam), it made a
mess of the folders structure (retrievable) and downloaded *all* Newsgroup posts (deletable) but otherwise it seems to have worked.

Have you tried compacting first thing after starting your machine?

As I stated, when you see the error message that a file is in use, you can
drag that message out of the way by the blue banner and you will see what
folder it got stuck on. If it is Folders File, close OE and delete
Folders.dbx in the message store.

I used to run 'Compact all folders' on a regular basis. Very

would get the error message "The folder is currently in use by Outlook
Express or by another application" but that was easily resolved by
closing
down and opening up OE. However, the error now message comes up every
time and cannot be cleared. I am not aware of making any changes that

Is it always the same folder?

What if you first select Outlook Express at the top of the Folder List
and then click File | Work Offline?

The name(s) of the files being compacted isn't displayed so it isn't
possible to see which one it's stopping on or, of course, if it's
consistent.

Working off line doesn't make any difference.
