Evidently SecureAlertSpamblocker was causing the problem .
I've used it for some time with no problem , but something about the
program
must have changed . I turned it off , and OE is working fine now .

The problem is not limited to McAfee. Any anti-virus program set to
scan e-mail can cause this. Disable that function. As long as your
anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are opened, scanning
e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and prone to problems.

The problem can also be caused by an anti-spam program.

I am using OE6 / XP2 / IE7
I do not use mcafee products .
I do use an email scanner.
To close OE , I have to ctrl/alt/delete
Until I close OE in this manner , it cannot be reopened.
