Re: Saving mail and contacts

Open Windows Explorer | C Drive | Documents and Settings | User Name. Right click on Favorites and send that to where the Address Book is saved.

Old fashioned, simple way, to backup the Address Book and Messages only.

Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export to any place on your HDD that is convenient for you. My Documents is fine.

To restore, open the Address Book and File | Import and point to where you saved it. To be extra safe, copy it to CD also.

For messages, even if you only care about what is in the Inbox, it is easiest to back up the entire message store. You can delete any folders or messages that you don't want.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

Right click on the Outlook Express folder, (Message Store), and Send To | My Documents. Copy this to CD also as an extra precaution.

Copy all three to CD and after you reformat, copy the CD to My Documents.

To restore, in OE: File | Import | Messages. Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Import from an OE6 Store Directory and point to where you saved it.

Open the Address Book and Import from where you saved it.

Open Windows Explorer and expand the path to Favorites. Click on My Documents and drag the favorites you saved in the right hand pane to the Favorites folder in the left.

I have simple backup needs. Only one identity and no settings I care to keep. I just need to save my favorites and address book and inbox.

Thanks
