The way it's working now is the way it should have been working all
along. It's been that way since at least IE5. As I recall, the IE3
Internet Mail and News used to use the Windows TEMP folder rather than
the IE Temporary Internet files (TIF). I don't recall whether OE4 was
the first version to use the TIF or still did it the IE3 way.
As for what may have changed, maybe the order that you do things in.
If you open DOC from OE, update it, close the DOC in WORD, then in OE
switch to another message, OE will delete the updated DOC from the TIF.
If you open the DOC from OE, then switch to another message, then close
the DOC in Word, the delete by OE will fail because WORD has the DOC
file locked. So if you later open Word and use the recent files, the
updated DOC will still be accessible.

Ken and Michael-Thanks so much for your answers. I can work with the
OE attchmt. procedure now that I understand it. So, it's not going to
be an ongoing problem for me. But, (perhaps the question is not worth
looking into), why did this happen suddenly? I've had my current
computer for over 2 years and have changed little, only an occasional
update. No serious changes.
