Since you top post, I will may my response here as well.
No, you are not at any more risk if you do not scan incoming mail, as long as your antivirus program
is kept up-to-date.
If a virus is attached to an email, it will be allowed to enter, but as soon as it tries to act, the
antivirus program will kill it.
The incoming mail scanners typically move the mail to a temporary location, scan it and then move it
back to the mail program. This is more likely to cause problems than just waiting for the virus to
start and then kill it.
(Think how nice it would be to not have the security checks at the airport but arm all the crew.
Then when the bad guy/gal tries something, the crew kills them. No more missed flights and lost
time at the airport).
Second Item: Sounds like you never deleted your first personal identity which was corrupted and now
you have two corrupted personal identities. Make a new third personal identity, transfer your mail
and address book to the new personal identity and delete the two corrupted identities. Then reboot
your computer and use the new identity. Be sure to check that the new identity is the one opened by
default.

Isn't it dangerous not to have an anti-virus checking email for viruses? I'm
not sure if I have a spam blocker and where I'd look for one or how to
disable it if I do have one. Where would I look for that? Would doing these
things leave my computer vunerable for invasion of some kind? The only
identity I can still switch from to another one without problems is my
business identity. The other 2 are corrupt now; the old personal one and now
the new personal one. I'm so frustrated and I hate to have to reboot each
time I have to change identities, which I do have to do all day long because
of my line of work and getting the different types of email constantly
throughout the day. It's even more frustrating because my 'restart' feature
doesn't work and I have to use the complete 'shut down' to do this. I've
written to another newsgroup for help with that.
Thanks for your continued help. Sorry I don't know how to do these things
myself.

See "To avoid such corruption in future" in my earlier reply. Have you been
following those recommendations? Have you disabled email scanning by your
anti-virus application? Have you disabled or uninstalled any anti-spam
applications?

I don't know what's going on with my system and Outlook Express. I did
create a new identity, which was working fine and allowing me to switch
between identities with no problem. That lastest a few days. Now even the
'new identity' will not allow me to switch without having to 'reboot' my
system. Do you have any idea what is going on with these updates that are
creating all of these problems? I have been using Outlook Express for as
long as I can remember and have never had the problems I'm currently
having. I've had some problems, which I just dealt with rather then have
to
do anything about them because of my lack of computer knowledge, but
that's
just dealing with graphic problems in stationery. One day I'll have the
time to deal with that. The problem I'm having switching identities is
major to me since I have a personal identity and a business identity. If
you know what I can do to avoid and fix please let me know.
As usual, thanks for your help.
What do you see in the new identity's Address Book in the Shared Contacts
folder (View > Folders and groups must be checked)?
.
Is MS Outlook also installed?

Thanks; I did the new identity and it works. I can now switch between
the
other identites without having any trouble. I tried to import the
address
book to the new identity bit have no clue. I followed the instructions
but
that didn't work. Do you have to import one address in the address book
at
a
time? That's what happened when I tired to import the entire book; only
one
address was imported. I'm glad I now have a working email indentity but
now
I have to find out how to get my messages from that indentity to the new
one. Any suggestions? Do I have to forward each and every one of them?
Also, did you say that after I get all of the messages and information
out
of that identity and delete it I can redo that identity again? I don't
want
to cause anymore problems for sure.
Thanks for the help.

What thread? What have you tried so far?
One or both of your current Identities may be damaged (the default Main
Identity, usually). Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named
Identity (File > Identities > Add new identity). Assuming all is well,
(1)
compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the
old
identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File >
Identities > Manage Identities).
To avoid such corruption in future:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to
local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline".
More
at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Nov. and Dec. of '06 someone had asked for help with this same problem
which
I did read all replies to. I do not see how this would apply to my
situation
because I do not have MSN messanger and I have been using EO 6 for a
very
long time now. I started having the problem with Outlook Express not
re-opening when trying to switch indenties after upgrading to IE7. I
now
have to reboot my system because OE hangs up when trying to switch
between
identities. Since it doesn't appear that any of the solutions
mentioned
in
the previous thread I found will be of any help, what can I do to stop
this
problem. I get orders for work in one of my identies and the other is
for
personel messages so it is necessary for me to be able to swtich
between
identities without all of these problems. Please help.
