Re: Problems with OE Security Update KB923694?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thanks for the great information Bruce ... a couple more quick questions.

- I do backup daily the OE files using Syncback to an external HD but after
you mentioned OEQB I realized I wouldn't know how to restore the files or
where to copy them if needed -- where in OE help does it tell me how to do
this?

-- I then thought I would try OEQB to have a 2nd alternative since it has
the auto restore feature, but after downloading it I don't see how to run it
since there is no desktop icon -- is this feature added to OE itself?

Thanks again ...

1: When you compact, a complete backup of your OE files are copied to the
Recycle Bin as a backup just in case some folders, or messages go missing
during the compaction process. This has been askef for for years. It doesn't
put <OP> Items that are deleted are placed in the Recycle Bin </QP> as she
states.

Also, there is a simple fix for the few people that experience a problem
with links after installing IE7.

As far as the RB issue goes:

This is due to a recent update. Now when you compact, a copy of your dbx
files are sent to the Recycle Bin in the event that something should go
wrong and messages, or entire folders are lost when you are compacting.

Many people do not back up Outlook Express on a regular basis. This new
mandatory backup is something people have been asking for quite awhile as we
spend a lot of time helping people getting their messages back, and they
have to purchase a tool to recover messages.

You can empty the Recycle Bin any time you want and the bak files will go
away until you compact again.

For more info, see the information outlined in red here:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

If you don't currently back up OE regularly, I would suggest you get this,
or a similar tool, (freeware):

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

Good to know Bruce ... I don't have a link but it was an article in
"Window's
Secrets" newsletter written by Susan Bradley.

I hope I am not being out of school copyright-wise, here is what she wrote
in this week's 1/11 letter:

(begin quote) ....
"MS06-076 (923694)
Patches may hose Outlook Express features

Before I get into the problems with January's patches, I'd like to call
your
attention to last year's patches that are affecting our overlooked e-mail
client, Outlook Express.

Included in Microsoft's MS06-076 security patch was a new Compact All
counter (which is only set when you select Compact All in Outlook
Express).
Items that are deleted are placed in the Recycle Bin.

You'd be wise to ensure that the compaction was properly completed before
deleting the copy of the messages in the Recycle Bin. This issue is not
adequately discussed in the security bulletin for the patch. More
information
is available in Usenet postings than in Microsoft's documentation. The
original patch is described in MS06-076.

If you've recently installed IE 7, you should also be aware that
hyperlinks
may no longer work in Outlook Express. This is explained in Knowledge Base
article 929867."
(end quote)

I also am concerned about the hyperlink problem from OE to IE7 -- any
thoughts?

I downloaded it the day it came out and have had no problems. Do you have
a
link to the review that said it had problems? This is the first I have
heard
about that.

Is this security update now safe to install on a XP home sp2 machine?
I
have
read reviews that this update from December? had problems and it was
suggested to wait until this month's set of MS updates but I have not
seen
anything to say if the update is now ok to install. Any thoughts?
