Michael: I did want to leave word that I did create a log that has a
lot of
technical data that I could never begin to understand. The enrty at
the
bottom does read: bad value was: REG_MULTI_SZ=PSched
Does this mean anything? I don't know how to attach the log for you to
look
at.. Thanks, Alex Allen

Since the Telnet command worked, that means it's not an issue of port
119 being blocked entirely. Although firewalls can generally be
setup
to allow traffic on a port for some programs while blocking others.

And if it were some corruption in OE data files or registry, the new
identity should not have had that problem.

You may want to create an NNTP log with will show more details about
the
communications between Outlook Express and your news server. Select
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Troubleshooting, News. Then access the
news server. The log will be created in the same folder with your
DBX
files (see Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder). You may need
to
close OE after accessing the news server for the log to get written
to
disk.

Thanks for getting back, Mike. I tried your suggestion with the
command and
it responded correctly. I am not using a router & use 2003 Office
Pro
if that
helps.... AH Allen

Try a Start, Run and enter the following command

telnet xxxx 119

where xxxx is the news server name. You can try your ISP's news
server
and Microsoft's.

If you can connect, it should respond with a command window and an
identifying message from the news server starting with "200". If
it
does, type QUIT then press Enter to exit.

If you cannot connect, then you know that the problem is outside
of
OE.

Are you going though any sort of Router?

Ooops! I have been unable to set up MS news successfully. I also
created a
new identity and tried that with no success. I made sure all
firewalls
were
off before I did this. If it is a firewall issue, are there any
"simple"
remedies. Thanks again for your input!

"Michael Santovec" wrote:

Installing or uninstalling IE7 should not have affected your
newsgroups.
IE has nothing to do with newsgroups.

Try setting up the Microsoft news server and see if that works
OK.
To set up an account for MSnews in OE
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/communities.htm#setupmsnews

If that works, then it points to a problem with your ISP's news
server
or settings for it. In that case, try removing the news
account,
restart OE and set it up again. If you still have problems,
try
setting
it up in a new identity.
How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169

If the Microsoft news server also fails, that could point to a
firewall
issue.

I had Explorer 7 downloaded, decided I did not like it, so
returned
to
my old
Explorer 6. On Outlook Express, the newsgroups disappeared.
When
I
try
to
re-set them, I get an error message that says "Your NNTP
server
has
not
responded in 60 seconds, do you want to continue". Nothing
else
ever
happens.
The settings are the same as before and I had no problem
accessing
newsgroups. I went thru a session with the local provider
(Time
Warner) and
the technician said it appeared to be a problem with IE. If
there
any
help or
suggestion out there... Thanks!
