Re: outlook express takes for ever to download hotmail folders

Wel hopefully things will return to normal for now I'll just read my mail on
the web and wait until I can sinc with OE.

Installing IE7 is and always has been optional.

I very much doubt that deleting messages from your Hotmail Inbox will
improve performance, unless you've somehow gotten the account over
its 2GB limit (and I find that hard to fathom).

My reference to the long holiday weekend was meant to imply that
perhaps only the monkeys are minding the MSN/Hotmail store right now.
<eg> Expect human beings to return sometime on the 2nd.

Wonderful! sorry about the sarcasm. I don't like using the web as it
drives
my screen reader crazy. I'll do it if I need to. If I clear some
space from
my email inbox though will it download faster when the holidays
season comes to an end?

Should I try another email client?

I wouldn't bother, no. We're starting to see similar posts from
other Hotmail users. The problem's most likely on MSN/Hotmail's end
(especially likely during a long holiday weekend) so until it
automagically clears up, access the account at www.hotmail.com
instead.
No I wont install IE7 as it doesn't cooperate with my screen
reader.

Had you tried IE7 and found that Hal screen reader didn't work? If
so, I have a fix for that.

Did you just recently install IE7?

Well no it's not. I created the new identity and added just the
hotmail account and it started to download the folders and I went
away for 3-5 minutes and it hung at this screen. no progress bar
nothing.
Downloading Folders from Hotmail
Downloading the list of folders available on the server. This
may take a few minutes if you have a slow connection.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the
default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a
new Named Identity (File > Identities > Add new identity). Assuming
all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old
identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the
new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities >
Manage Identities).
To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them
to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and
frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while
"working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also
cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional
protection.

Have [you] ever accessed or been able to access the account in

Hello. I have it set up to where OE can download my hotmail
folders if I add
my hotmail address. The problem is the folders never
download. my screen hangs at the message that "this may take
a few minutes" and i am not on a slow connection. what's
going on? Thanks.
