Re: Can't send attachments with Outlook Express / Hotmail

How do I tell which DriverDesc is Ethernet?

There is no OE7. There never will be.

As to article 315008, did you see the note?

NOTE: If the issue continues to occur, repeat the preceding steps, but
type a different MTU value between 1,454 and 576. When you test
additional MTU values, try 576 and then increase the number to 600. If
setting the MTU value to 600 does not resolve the issue, increase the
value by 100 until you reach 1,400. If the issue continues to occur, try
1,454 and then stop. When you are finished, if the issue is still not
resolved, change the MTU value back to 576.

And make sure that you restart the PC after each change.

Further update. Firstly, I updated to IE7 and it makes no difference
(is
there a version 7 of OE? I was under the impression that upgrading to
IE7
would upgrade OE too). I've done some more investigation. I'm
getting the
problem with both of my laptops, but it works ok from my desktop where
I can
send attachments of any size. All 3 machines are running OE6
6.00.2900.2180
(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). The two laptops are both able to send
attachments up to about 30k, anything more causes the error. I don't
suspect anti-virus or spysweeper as I've turned these off, as well as
Windows
firewall. I can setup my Yahoo! email account in OE6 and can send
large
attachments with this, but not with Hotmail. I don't suspect my
gateway s/w
as all machines are defined with the same setup. The **ONLY**
difference is
that the two laptops use wireless whereas the desktop is connected to
the
modem/router via Ethernet cable.

Incidentally, as a result of explicitly "Allow All Cookies" from
Hotmail.com, I was unable to sign-in to Hotmail via IE as "cookies are
blocked", which seems to be the reverse?!?

Hi PA Bear, thanks for your reply.

I'm running IE6, but can migrate to IE7 if that might help. I went
through
everything in your response. As per ?kbid=315008, I added the MTU
registry
entry (value 576) for each of the three DriverDesc's (I couldn't
figure out
which one was Ethernet, so just did all three) - this was missing
from the
three NetCfgInstanceId's (is this normal?). Anyway, it didn't make a
scrap
of difference, I'm afraid. I've turned off virus checker, windows
firewall,
and spysweeper - makes no difference. Shall I leave the MTU's that I
created? (Incidentally, as a result of

I'll try IE7 and report back.

Are you running IE7?

Most of the time, the error indicates problems on MSN/Hotmail's end
(despite
what they may say). Here are some things you can check:

Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Sites> type in

hotmail.com
(msn.com)
(passport.net)

and Allow All Cookies for each domain.

How to Manage Cookies (IE6)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283185

Troubleshooting Secure Sites in WinXP SP2
(Hotmail and .NET Passport should be treated as Secure Sites)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870700

/Birefly/ disable your third-firewall [BE CAREFUL!], any "system"
tools
(NSW, NIS, anything by Norton or McAfee) and pop-up/ad blockers to
see if
they're interfering.

If you use a router, you may need to adjust MTU values:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315008

IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>HTTP 1.1>toggle on/off; "Use
HTTP 1.1
through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone in OE runs; should be
Restricted
Sites]>Custom Level>User Authentication>Logon>toggle between the
setting
choices here ['Prompt for Username and Password' and
'Automatic...current
Username...' works for me.]

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might
help, too.

I'm running Outlook Express 6 for my Hotmail email service. I
now cannot
send any attachments except fairly small ones (e.g. 25k).
Anything larger
just causes the send function to spin its wheels, eventually
giving the
following error msg:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Hotmail', Server:
'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol:
HTTPMail,
Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number:

I also run Outlook 2003 on the same pc which works fine. I also
run
Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition.
