Re: Message rule doesn't work

Hi Antioch,

Scroll back through my dialog with Bruce Hagen, and you will see that in
this case it is an HTML spam, not a .gif spam. What is interesting is that
the spammer apparently used a technique in which the text portion of the
multi-part message is munged (thus camouflaging the text and avoiding
detection by my message rule), and then "un-munged" using some fancy <style>
applications in the HTML portion. So, for example, what looks like the word
"PHARMACY" to the reader of the spam message, looks something like
"PnHfARdMvACwY" to the message rule detector program. Dirty tricks! And they
think I'm gonna actually BUY something from them??

Hello,

I get approximately 6.23 x 10^23 spams every day with the word "PHARMACY"
in the body text, so being a smart guy, I created a message rule to kick
those messages into the Delete folder. Problem is, it hasn't been
working. To make matters more mysterious, when I send MYSELF a test
message with the word "pharmacy" in the body text, it winds up in the
delete folder as it should.

Anybody know what gives?

Thanks,
Roy

Hi Roy
These .gif type spams are like a picture and so message rules cannot read
any text in them. Most come with a coloured background and coloured
lettering.
See if your ISP can stop these for you in your Mail Box.
ISPs are slowly starting to offer spam blocking, but not all can block
these .gif type.
If they do you may need to go into the Mail Box every 7 days or so and
check that there are no genuine emails caught in there. Most ISPs that
provide this service, auto-delete on a 7 day cycle.
There is a very long winded message rule that I have read does stop them -
what you do is set the message rule to block anything that does NOT
contain a letter of the alphabet i.e. 26 rules. ;-(
