Several months ago my hotmail inbox to Outlook Express deleted all it's
messages. After that point I've been getting messages to my inbox
correctly
however. I've already checked with hotmail (using pro account) and they
couldn't locate any problems with my account.
As a backup plan to retreive all my old messages I planned on simply using
my home computer (which has all past emails in inbox) and simply copy
those
over into my current inbox. However upon net research (looking for best
way
to do this) I found info on dbx file folder format and downloaded program
"Mail Navigator". I discovered that all my old emails were in fact never
deleted but put to different numbered dbx files (examples: Hotmail - Inbox
(1).dbx, Hotmail - Inbox (10).dbx, Hotmail - Inbox (11).dbx, etc.).
How do I go about recovering these emails and putting them into one
"Hotmail
- Inbox" file? Read somewhere that there's a bug in OE which only allows
dbx
files to get to a certain file size before it creates a new one. Is this
true? If so I'd like to figure out way to still put all emails together
into
one file but remove image files within them (compact?) to make for better
file size. If not I can always break up files by year I guess.
Another problem is that dbx files are including alot of messages that I've
either deleted or sent to different folders for organizational purposes.
Also what is best backup solution for backing up OE dbx files? At one
point
I was so frustrated with OE and tried using Thunderbird becuase of it's
backup features. However I found that Thunderbird isn't compatable with
Hotmail and uses pop format as well as can't break up messages into
folders
setup on account.
Well, first you just can't copy the DBX files to the other computer. OE
won't read them.
A couple of options come to mind.
1)(Quicker faster method that will cost a few bucks but then, how important
is your email you want to recover?
DBXtract to extract the eml files out of the dbx files. Quicker and then
it's just a drag and drop of the .eml files into an OE folder (not the
Inbox). http://www.oehelp.com
2) Longer harder but no money involved. Just thinking about writing it down
makes me want to suggest to go no further and just use DBXtract.
Not knowing the filenames, I'm going to give a rough idea of what you might
be able to do, depends upon several factors, one being the filemight not be
readable because of the corruption.
What caused it was either the dbx file became corrupt enough that the
Folders.dbx file that OE couldn't read it and just created a new one with
the (x) in the name, where x is a number. Apparently it happened numerous
times if you have multiple Hotmail. Inbox(x).dbx files.
First, create a folder and copy all the DBX files to it.
Burn it to CD for transport to the other computer (or copy via network)
If you burned them to CD, you will have to copy them to a folder on the hard
drive for import and then make sure the Read Only attribute is not set for
those files. CTRL A to select all, then right click on them and select
Properties. Uncheck the Read Only box if checked then press OK, if not
checked, skip this part.
Now, create a subfolder and copy the Folders.dbx file to it.
Start off with a Hotmail Inbox.dbx file. Copy it to the subfolder.
In the subfolder, rename it to Inbox.dbx
Now try to import into OE.
File | Import | Messages | Microsft Outlook Express 6 | Import mailfrom an
OE6 store directory
Press OK then press Browse to navigate to the subfolder where the two dbx
fles are located.
Select it, then press OK and finishup the import.
Now you have an idea of what you might have to do over and over and over and
why DBXtract would be easier and faster.
