Re: downloading hotmail

Thanks for this. I wish it were true but in fact the Sent Items in the
Hotmail webmail has posts that never got downloaded to OE. It jumps
straight from the 8th of August to the 21st, while in webmail it has many
in the intermediate period.

I understand your problem and everything in every folder at www.hotmail.com /should/ download into OE. My #1 was mainly in reference to backing up OE data.

For some reason it keeps going wrong. Particularly when I use
processor-intensive programmes

This is a topic for another thread, preferably in WinXP General newsgroup.

I mentioned this to the repairs technician at the computer shop. They said
that it was like putting a burglar alarm on your house and leaving the
back door open. I must say I get so much conflicting information on
issues like this (including firewall advice) that I end up totally
confused.

What does the tech at the computer shop know about OE or Windows security? Even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.

OK will try this.
