Hi PA
Yes I AM aware of that link - I was not too sure if Joy was and could not
find it, but you did.
Plus, when downloading an update (if one is not used to it, as I was once)
you can easily be attracted by the lure of a more recent version.
See the below and in the first para it is suggesting IE7??
One could read it and think - 'Oh that's better, I think I'll have that' -
and one can easily not bother to read all the rest.
Copied from link(ack'ments to MS)
"Brief Description
Internet Explorer 6 has been updated as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2
and a beta of Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP is now available. For more
information on downloading Internet Explorer 7, please read the Overview
section. Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 is recommended for systems
running versions of Windows prior to Windows XP."

Perhaps others are not as naive as me(or was).
Does this explain my earlier warning comment to Joy?

IE7 Beta3 on Win98?
Hi PA
Is there something I am missing in the above reply - I don't fully get
it -
yet.

Joy,
Just a thought - don't be tempted to install IE7 - it might be offered
to
you on the MS site - its beta - still under testing.
Keep to IE6.

Thanks, Robear. Before I send this info on to him, what is meant by
a
"different operating system" ? I don't want to confuse him. <S>

Your friend must download/install IE6 SP1 independent of Windows
Update:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx
Downloading IE for a Different Operating System
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=174680
I would STRONGLY recommend that the anti-virus application be
disabled
prior to installing IE6 SP1 in Win98.
After getting IE6 SP1 installed, go immediately to Windows Update to
install additional critical updates the machine will now need.

I have a new friend who acquired an older computer (Win 98) recently
and
it
still has OE v.5 on it. I can't remember how to tell him the way to
upgrade
to v.6. As I recall, the upgrade would be both for IE and OE.
Thanks.
