Re: Can't set OE as default client in User Account

I'm embarrassed I didn't think to try "Set Program Access and Defaults" in
all this. However, it hasn't helped. In fact, it seems to have made things
worse. Now, neither OE nor IE show as defaults in the User account.

Everything is fine in the Administrator account.

Status of the sections of the applet:

Microsoft Windows: Remains at IE, OE, WMP, WM, and MVM, as desired.

Non-Microsoft: Remains at "Remove access: IE, OE, WMP, WM, and MVM." (There
is no provision to make changes in this section - other than the radio
button, I guess).

Custom: Remains at "Use my current . . ." even after I reset things to IE,
OE, etc.

If I select the radio button on the Microsoft Windows section, and then
click on OK, dialog box says IE, OE, etc., are being set as default, access
being granted, etc. However, in practice, nothing seems to be happening.

If I reopen the applet, things are just as they were - as described above.

Ditto for the Custom section. Nothing changes.

Have tried logging on and off after changes, and rebooting, all without any
effect.

Found KB 328326 and 332003 having to do with this applet, but they're not
much help. Are the radio buttons the only way to use this applet? If so,
they seem to have no effect on anything.

Somehow the Administrator account doesn't seem to be acting as an
Administrator account.

So, I'm still looking for ideas.

Thanks,

Might look in Control Panel, Set System Defaults and see what is set there.
You may need to log off and log back on as an Administrator.

IE and OE 6 (XP SP-2) are the only clients installed on the PC. Outlook
is
not installed. In the Administrator account, everything is just fine.

In a User account, however, starting OE gets this error message:

"Outlook Express is not currently your default mail client.
Would you like to make it your default mail client?"

Clicking YES doesn't change anything. Nor does going into
OE\Tools\Options
and trying to make OE the default. The change is not saved.

In IE\Tools\Internet Options\Programs in the User account, OE does show as
the default e-mail client. But, starting OE from within IE produces the
same
error message.

Using the Run As command, to open msimn.exe with Administrator privileges
from within the User account, gets this error message:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Have tried reregistering OE and other suggestions from recommendations in
this discussion group, but without success in getting rid of the error
message.

[E.g. "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg;

http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx;

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098; etc.]

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express shows OE as default and the
correct path to msoe.dll.

I have been unable to find elsewhere in the Registry, either under the
User
account SID or other key, where this "default" might also be specified.

I would sure appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks,
Rudy R.
