For the size of the message text, just hold down the Ctrl key and give your mouse wheel a spin.
For text size other than the message body:
Right click on the Desktop | Properties | Appearance | Advanced. In the Item Field, click the down arrow and chose Icon and make the changes you wish.
This will change the size in some other places as well.

I have tried everything to increase the size of the fonts in the
inbox, sent and other mailboxes without success. I have gone to Tools>
Options>Read and clicked on fonts and selected largest but still the
characters in the messages windows along with the contacts etc are
small.
Is there something I am doing wrong - is there is another way to
accomplish increasing font size.
