Re: Newsgroup problem

By Headers, I do mean a new message showing in the columns section. Subject, From, Sent etc. You do have the Preview Pane enabled? View | Layout | Show Preview Pane.

Help will give you a good explanation of Synchronizing. I never use it.

Account settings can become corrupt, as well as identities.

Tools | Accounts | News will reveal a button to remove the account. Before you do, continue to Properties and copy the settings for reinstalling the account.

You may also have a damaged identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. Remove Get XXX headers and click on this link and see if all messages download.

If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and delete it.

Bruce:
This does happen with all newsgroups and I did uncheck Get 300 headers. Now after using Synchronize all groups it shows that all messages are downloaded but now I can't get to see any. The only reason I can read and reply to your messages is because I am using another pc. I deleted one group and reinstalled it but it still responds the same way.
I am not too knowledgeable with this entire procedure. i assume by "headers" you mean the titles of the messages. If a title shows up and i click it I assume the message will appear when all is working properly.
Exactly what does using the Synchronize command do? I am just floundering and may have inadvertently hit a wrong button.
Do you think I would be better off just deleting all the groups and reinstalling them? If so, could you be kind enough to list all the necessary steps to set this up correctly but only if you have the time and patience to do that. I would greatly appreciate that. Thanks. Stan

Is this happening with all newsgroups and servers, or just some? Did you uncheck Get XXX Headers?

FYI: Catch up doesn't download headers. It marks them all as read. From OE Help:

To mark messages as read

a.. To mark an individual message as read or unread, select the message. On the Edit menu, click Mark as Read or Mark as Unread.
b.. To mark all newsgroup messages as read when you quit Outlook Express or go to another newsgroup, on the Tools menu, click Options. On the Read tab, select Mark all messages as read when exiting a newsgroup.
c.. To mark all messages in a selected newsgroup as read, including messages not yet downloaded, select the newsgroup in the Folders list. On the Edit menu, click Catch Up.
This is handy, for example, when you return from vacation and don't want to download all unread messages, but want to start reading the current ones.

d.. To mark all the messages in a given newsgroup conversation as read, select either the original message or any of its replies. On the Edit menu, click Mark Conversation as Read.
A conversation is an original message and all its posted replies. Conversations are sorted and grouped according to the title of the original message. For example, a conversation that starts with a message titled "Ideas for Labrador owners" includes all of the replies, titled "RE: Ideas for Labrador owners."

Did that okay but still get erratic behaviour. Status bar shows many messages downloading but very few appear if any at all after clicking Catch Up. Stan

In Tools | Options | Read - Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. In the Maintenance Tab, at the top, select the newsgroup(s) you want a then hit Reset.

You may want to do this first:

If you want to download newsgroups, but don't want hundreds, or thousands, of messages, you can create a message rule such as this:

Tools>Message Rules>News.

Box 1: Where the message was sent more than days ago
Box 2: Delete it & Stop processing more rules
Box 3: Click on "Days" and choose the # of days you want.
Name the rule.

It will only download the messages for the number of days you selected.

If this doesn't work, delete the news account and add it back. That can also become corrupted.

I can no longer access any newsgroup messages. When I go to Properties on any newsgroup I find there are many messages there but when I open the message pane it says "There are no items in this view."
If I Right Click on a newsgroup and click Catch Up, once in a while the messages appear but usually don't. After I close out I again cannot access the messages.

Using XP Home w/SP2 and Outlook Express 6. TIA for any ideas.
