Funny, I've been using the main identity since 97 and never had to delete it.

You've just been lucky. The Main Identity has a different structure in the registry that the new named accounts. But, the whole identity thing will be a thing of the past (or so we are led to believe) in the upcoming version of "Windows Mail."
