That did it. Changing the authorization in the IE options was what I needed.

it's not a paid account, you may expect continuing errors in the future and
I don't think Hotmail has any interest in improving the service for its non
paying customers. Although you might want to recheck that your settings are
all in agreement with the following:
In Internet Explorer (not Outlook Express), click on the Tools/Internet
Options/Security, and click on the appropriate zone from above (Internet or
Restricted). Click on Custom, and scroll all the way down to the bottom
(User Authentication).
If OE is set to use the Internet Zone, then the User Authentication section
should say "Automatic logon only in Intranet zone".
If OE is set to use the Restricted zone, then the User Authentication section should say "Prompt for user name and password".
