Has anyone else had a problem with Outlook Express after their news provider
has made a server change?
My news provider warned users to delete and recreate the news server account
since all message ID's would change.
So I deleted the account then recreated it (verifying that I used identical
settings).
Results: - news server login OK (account and password valid) reread of newsgroups list completes with no problem. - enormous message counts - millions - when you subscribe to any group - then after about 30 seconds a reasonable count (however it is completely different if you delete and resubscribe) - after another delay nothing actually downloads and then not even a 0 is left as count. As if everything has been read. - no error messages at all either from outlook or the server. - my other news provider using the same OE 6 software still works fine (as you can see from the posting of this message).
Teranews (my news provider) seems unwilling to respond despite sending several messages and have not mentioned any problems on their status page.
I cannot find a single page describing a similar Outlook or news server problem on the internet!
I am using XP Pro and Outlook Express 6.
Perhaps outlook keeps some information concerning the old news server message headers even when it is deleted and then reuses it on recreate?
However I tried a single news group that I had never used before and the
problem is identical.
The initial massive count for any group is always a bigger number
(38,000,000+) it seems that all messages on the provider are initially being
seen as valid for any group!
I tried a delete account - logout - clear temporary files and then a
recreate but with the same effect.
Its 5 days since the news provider changed its server so its hard to believe
they could leave millions of paying users without a service.
Someone out there must have an idea? (if possible short of a complete
reinstallation of outlook and a risk of losing all my emails and my working
news account)
Unsubscribe from the groups, delete the account, close OE.
Check the message store folder to ensure there aren't any left over dbx files associated with the old news account. If so, delete them.
Start OE, reset up the account.
