protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions. Ran for
about 15 then asked for my windows XP disk. Half-hour later done and there is
no change.

Go to Start | Run and type
SFC /scannow
It won't hurt to try it. Its not a problem exclusive to OE, as other system
sounds don't work, but it plays okay, so it sounds [sic] like the coupling
is somehow messed up.
