Try this. Open Outlook EXpress, click Tools/Accounts - Mail tab and highlight the wanadoo account, then click the Make Default account button. Now prepare a message and see if it goes through. I still suspect your problem is related to attempting to send a message from an account that is not the wanadoo account.

I am now only using the user name after the @ sign in my configuration
settings, although up until this problem arose this had been set with my
full e-mail address. I can't recall now how long my full e-mail address has
been shown there. I somehow think if got pre-filled when I set up other
identities for the other family members. Anyway, it's been working fine like
that for some time.
I understand what you say about my son's and my address being aliases on the
same account "...surname.fsnet.co.uk". Yes I do have message rules set up to
filter mail. The laptop OE settings have been the same as my desktop. Like
yourself, up until now I have continued to use the freeserve settings (not
Wanadoo) on the laptop, without any problem.
I've tried your suggestion to check "My Server requires authentication" but
still get the same sending error message.
Regards.
Mike

| You are only using the bit after the @ as your User Name in your
| configuration settings?
| Your son's email address and yours are actually one and the same. They
| are aliases for the same account. Mike@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and
| son@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx are the same email address. I presume you use
| message rules to separate the mail? The laptop should have the same
| settings for outgoing server/user name as the desktop.
|
| Try checking - My Server requires authentication and see what happens.
