Re: Cleaning up

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Steve

You can encounter the original persons problem if you compact ( right click on newsgroup folder, properties, local file etc ) after using the Find Message Window to Move Files. If, however, you browse to another newsgroup folder in Find Message Window before compacting the original Folder the problem does not arise.

I hope I have made my point clear.

Whenever I manually compact now, I hit the backup button in OETool first. That way, if it fails, which it may do, I have the backup I can use to restore what didn't work.

I don't think so. I never compacted that way. I did it manually and reset the counter in the registry, until Steve came up with the newer OETool.

I'm pretty sure the only way to stop it is to shut down the machine, and we know what happens then. <eg>

Does it give a chance OR a possibility of trying to stop it after the process is well under way?

Sounds to me that it is compacting your folders, which it will do after 100 closings of OE, and you chose at some time to: Do Not Show Me This Again when you saw the prompt. Doing that will not stop the compacting. It will start it without giving you the choice with the prompt.

If you want the prompt back:

Replace the Compact Prompt:

Go to: Start>Run>Regedit>Enter and follow this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Don't Show Dialogs.

In the right pane right click on the appropriate entry and choose Delete.

And this is a very good option:

Steve Cochran has added a button in his new version of OE Tool
that will not only Compact All Folders, but at the same time,
resets the "Compact Check Count" to zero whenever you compact
manually. You will see the prompt again if you do not compact
before 100 closings.

It is still advised to check Work Offline before you compact.

From time to time when I close Outlook Express with the X in the upper right hand corner a window appears that tells me that it is "Cleaning up". I get a blue scroll bar that runs across the window for a few seconds and then the window goes away. What is taking place?
Thank you,
Bob
