Re: OE error message question

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thanks for posting back, Mary. It would certainly seem like a problem on Hotmail's end.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use (the Local folders) Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to other local folders you've created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in WinXP SP2 and Win2K03] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 & Win2K03 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Just thought I would let you know how this is going. Once a day or more
Outlook Express sticks while checking the Hotmail account......so I do what
you said to do which is to stop the checking......close it out and then
restart Outlook Express .....then it works.

I did try your fixes but it still hangs up after a couple of days.

Attachments to newsgroup posts are generally frowned upon, Mary.

Assuming you're able to access the Hotmail account in OE most of the time,
the error should be taken at face value: "[the] Service [is] Unavailable"
(OE can't connect to the MSN/Hotmail server for whatever reason; i.e., the
problem's on *their* end, not yours).

The first box was the usual "could not be started because another
instance
of it is still running....".

[Are you using a new mouse, by any chance, Mary? Is this machine fully up-to-date at Windows Update?]

This repeated behavior is more troubling, assuming (1) you hadn't opened
OE yet today, (2) you allowed any Automatic Compacting to complete before
shutting down the last time and you'd already (3) reset the Compact Count
per...

OE - Reset Compact Check Count to 0 (Line 367, Left)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If and when this happens again:

1. Open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+Delete key combo) and see if an instance of
Outlook Express is indeed already running.

2. Only single-click on the OE shortcut/icon to open OE, instead of
double-clicking. You or someone else may have inadvertently reset folder
options to open an item using a single click, in which case you're
actually trying to open a second instance of OE when you double-click.

Post back with your replies to the above.

In the meantime, run a full system scan with your anti-virus application
per instructions here (Steps 1-4):

OE does seem to be working better with those fixes you gave me but I did
get this today.

The first box was the usual "could not be started because another
instance
of it is still running....".

Then I get this error message which came up an hour or so later (I think)
. I did not restart the computer and after I clicked on the error
message,
then OE opened when I clicked on it. That was a first. Usually I have
to
restart the computer.

I will do so.

YW & if that Hotmail-in-OE problem persists, post back with any error
messages you get.

In WinXP SP2 and despite how often you compact all folders
manually, OE
will offer to compact all folders every 100 times you close OE.
If you
reply No to the prompt when you see it, the compacting takes
place
anyway. Furthermore, you won't see the prompt when it comes up
again anytime in future!

From the behavior you describe, I suspect you chose No to this
prompt and what you're see is OE trying to complete the automatic
compacting: Just let it do so. WARNING: Attempting to close OE
via Task Manager or
shutting down the machine while the automatic compacting is
taking
place
puts you at risk of losing your entire message store!

Despite repeated and quite vocal pleas from OE MVPs, the OE Team
still hasn't provided a KB article documenting this automatic
compacting feature (and the risks of shutting down OE or Windows
while it's taking
place). To reset the "Compact Count" in the Registry, see

OE - Reset Compact Check Count to 0 (Line 367, Left)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

MVP Steve Cochran's handy-dandy OETool has a button to compact
all
folders. As an added bonus, using it also resets the Compact
Count: http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/Default.aspx

Nevermind about the numbers. Does the problem about which
you
post
occur on a machine running WinXP SP2?

Are you posting from the problem machine (Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527)?

I could not find another instance of it running on my
