Have you tried a Defrag? I know you're trying to save mail, but the problem lies outside of OE.

If I save to the default My Documents folder, it saves fast. Once I can switch the Save in destination with the drop down menu to the Desktop, it saves there fast. The only part of the operation that is slow is changing what appears in the save in menu from My Documents to another destination to save to.
I'm thinking (this is way out but) that because my My Documents folder is so huge, this is what slows this function down. Either that or there is a fault with the operation of changing the Save in destination with that drop down arrow menu.
What do you think?

I appreciate that this seems to be peculiar to OE so I'll lay off the advice
to check other more general forums :)
Does this also happen with newsgroups, for example try saving this reply in
the same way and see if the time compares. I am thinking it may be something
to do with the folder the mail is actually stored in, in which case I have a
question.
Do you have "Personal" folders for storing mail or is it basically all in
the "InBox" folder? See what I am thinking here is that the mail you are
reading is already "Saved" in the OE folder but when you opt to actually
save it (a copy) elsewhere OE had to go back and relocate the stored mail,
because OE uses a proprietary database system (polite way of saying
potential screwup) for email this can take time. Also it is possible that
mail files are treated differently (Scanned?) when saving by your antivirus.
Another guess but you could try turning that off and saving some using just
the same method you do now. Sorry, this will take some time due to having to
reset the folders to my docs etc.
I'm sure you have thought of most things but you could try a new personal
folder, copy some unimportant emails to it then try reading and saving from
there just to see if folder size has a bearing.
Be interested in your results and they may help someone get to the root of
this annoyance,
