550 errors are associated with relaying. Are you connected to the ISP you are trying to send the mail through? See the info at this link for more:

This post is going on two newsgroups. One for XP and one for OE as I cannot determine where the problem really lies.

The background:

The system is a new (actually refurbished) unit with XP Pro and SP2 installed. It also has automatic updates installed. The user is using IE and OE as installed. The user is the sole account and so is the administrator. The ISP is a cable.provider

The problem:

Email can be received but not sent. The error that comes back says "SMTP 550 relay not permitted, Secure SSL No, Server error 550 Ox800ccc79." The quote may not be exact, but has the pertinent information. The internet mail options were set up with guidance from the ISP. I further checked by phone as we went step by step through the setup. The ISP contends it is a MS problem. The user and I are on the same ISP.

What has been done:

I have looked through the Knowledge Base and have tried some of the simpler tasks. The XP firewall is not enabled and Zone Alarm is not yet installed. The "server requires authentication box has been checked and unchecked. Temporary files have been deleted. I have printed out the article regarding "SMTP behavior in.WindowsXP.." I have not yet attempted to go through the procedures it lists for testing the relay. At this point it must be obvious that I am not versed in the workings of SMTP.

With hat in hand, so to speak, I am looking for advice on getting his problem behind us.

Thanks

Charlie
