Offbeat idea.
If server names are in friendly format such as mail.isp.net the mail client
will have to do a DNS lookup to find the numeric IP... so maybe in your XP
OS the DNS server listed just happens to be a slow one.
Lookup you mail server(s) numeric IP addresses and try the numbers instead
of the names which will at least eliminate this possibility.
