It sounds like you are sharing contacts with Outlook and since you don't specify your operating system, there are different ways to fix the problem. Please review the above linked article and post back with details if you still have questions.

No such luck. I re-installed the update, "fixed it" with the start-run
changes exactly as typed, and then changed the email settings as described.
Still doesn't work.

When I click on "Create Mail", I get this message: There was an error
opening this message. An error has occured. Under contacts, it says this: The
Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured.
Please reinstall.

So am I destined to reinstall OE and if so, how do I do it so I don't lose
all my folders, contacts, etc?
