Have you run the 3 programs I suggested? Do that first.
As far as updating your computer, since you are on dial-up, order a free SP2 CD. SP1 as well as all SP1 updates are included. Once you download SP2 from the CD, you will have some updates waiting for you that came out after SP2, but they are relatively small and you should be OK downloading them on dial-up.

Hi Bruce,
Sorry I'm using XP home edition and there is an ink folder in Common Files
Microsoft shared that is to do with Outlook Express apparently. I did have
SP1 but when had to reformat I lost it and the person who reinstalled all the
programs for me couldn't find their copy and my dial up won't stay connected
long enough to download it as I keep getting that 'ignored an incoming call'
message even though no call comes through but no amount of extra wording on
modem changes it.
I checked the link you gave me and it said about changing registery and am
terrified of doing that and it says it could ask for SP1 media and as I don't
have that or anyway to get it I'm not sure what to try next.
I did get a w32.spybot virus in May but Norton picked it up before it got on
system but am wondering now if it got on but have had search of regedit but
no signs of any of the changes.

I don't even know what OS you are using. The Inkpad you speak of isn't part
of OE, so I can't help you there.
You should keep up-to-date with service packs and updates, but you might want to fix the missing files problem first.
You can try this:
How to Reinstall or Repair IE6 and OE6: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Although written for WinXP, it works for all Windows operating systems 98 or
newer.
If you are using WinXP/SP2, and it was not already on your computer from the
factory, you will have to remove SP2 first.
How to remove SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;875350
And, you might want to consider using OE as a newsreader instead of the Web
Interface. It only takes a few minutes to set up and is much easier for us,
and you.
