MSN Hotmail can only be used with MS Outlook Express if you have already
been doing so since before Sept. 26, 2004. Otherwise, you have to pay
$19.99 per year. By all accounts in these groups, it is not terribly
reliable. I have not used it often enough to comment one way, or the other.
It uses an MSN proprietary protocol; "HTTPMail". No other email client than
MS Outlook, and MS Outlook Express, can use it.
Yahoo! Mail Plus is probably more reliable. It is the service that my ISP
uses for SMTP/POP3 email. It is a straightforward SMTP/POP3 email service,
unlike MSN's HTTPMail service. One advantage to Yahoo! Mail Plus is that
you can access the SMTP server from any ISP, regardless of outbound port 25
blocks. Unless an ISP is blocking port 587 (which should not be the case),
you just set up MS Outlook Express to use port 587 instead of port 25. You
will find that option on the Advanced tab of the mail account options.
Since you are willing to pay for SMTP email service, you may consider using
a Google search on "SMTP email service"; you may find a better provider
than Yahoo!.
