Re: News Server Won't Connect After Windows Update

Glad to hear you found it and let's hope they will be helpful with some
support. Using such a "firewall" in addition to the basic firewall installed with Windows XP might not be the best idea and I'd be very reluctant to discard the Windows Firewall in favor of such a firewall intended soley to promote (possbily illegal) P2P file sharing. There are just too many badly written programs out in the wild to trust one blindly as they are asking users to do. Good luck and thanks for the feedback.

You put your finger on it. I use Peer Guardian and the latest update is
blocking corel.com. Don't know why? Will check with the Peer Guardian team
and find out. Thanks for the good info!

Try telnet to the server to see if something is blocking from your
computer. FWIW, I can telnet to the server w/o problems.

Open a command window (Win 95/98 -Start/Run and type: command)(Win2k/XP-
Start/Run and type: cmd)

When the command box opens, type the following:

   telnet cnews.corel.com 119

When you hit the Enter key, you should get a message that you are
connected and that posting is OK. If not, you have something in either a
firewall, a router or some type of blocking software that is preventing
you from connection. I do not believe the problem can be ascribed to
Outlook Express since other users can connect without problems.

Please clarify: You cannot connect to cnews.corel.com using a new Named
Identity?

Thanks for the response - I restarted after deleting the account but
no help.
I created a new identity and tried both an account which connects OK
and an account which does not - same problem - can not connect to
the account that won't connect.
The message is "unable to connect to the server" (after a
time out). in the details:
Configuration:
  Account: cnews.corel.com
  Server: cnews.corel.com
  Protocol: NNTP
  Port: 119
  Secure(SSL): 0
  Code: 800ccc0e

I have another computer on the same 2-computer network which works
OK. I removed the router and made a direct connection to the
computer that has the problem, but no help. I disabled Zone Alarm
and verified that the Microsoft firewall was still disabled, still
no help.
Definitely something corrupt somewhere - very strange! Any other
thoughts appreciated.
