Re: News Server Won't Connect After Windows Update

Try telnet to the server to see if something is blocking from your computer. FWIW, I can telnet to the server w/o problems.

Open a command window (Win 95/98 -Start/Run and type: command)(Win2k/XP- Start/Run and type: cmd)

When the command box opens, type the following:

   telnet cnews.corel.com 119

When you hit the Enter key, you should get a message that you are connected and that posting is OK. If not, you have something in either a firewall, a router or some type of blocking software that is preventing you from connection. I do not believe the problem can be ascribed to Outlook Express since other users can connect without problems.

Please clarify: You cannot connect to cnews.corel.com using a new Named Identity?

Thanks for the response - I restarted after deleting the account but
no help.
I created a new identity and tried both an account which connects OK
and an account which does not - same problem - can not connect to
the account that won't connect.
The message is "unable to connect to the server" (after a
time out). in the details:
Configuration:
  Account: cnews.corel.com
  Server: cnews.corel.com
  Protocol: NNTP
  Port: 119
  Secure(SSL): 0
  Code: 800ccc0e

I have another computer on the same 2-computer network which works
OK. I removed the router and made a direct connection to the
computer that has the problem, but no help. I disabled Zone Alarm
and verified that the Microsoft firewall was still disabled, still
no help.
Definitely something corrupt somewhere - very strange! Any other
thoughts appreciated.
