OE lockup when clicking any url in newsgroup

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Unaccountably, about 2 days ago I noticed that clicking any url in OE causes
OE to lock up. Either clicking in the preview or bringing the news article
up then clicking the url will totally lock up OE. I tried a bunch of stuff:
I use OE heavily and take part in usenet activities every day. Maybe I wore
it out?? Hvae to bring up task manager and terminate the window that is
open.

....tried...

1. clean out history, temporary IE files, delete message, Launch reusing
old windows, launch using new window.

2. ran latest AdAware, scanned with McAfee 8.01 latest antivirus. No
problems encountered. I use AdAware regularly and keep McAfee up to date as
it is a corporate version.

3. Have latest patches & all upgrades to Windows 2000 pro. All licensed
stuff and keep system up to date.

I can copy and paste the urls into explorer and they work just fine, just
cannot launch them from OE anymore

Something similar happened to IE several months ago. I use to have google
as my default homepage. If I copied and pasted a phrase into google and
pressed return, IE would lock up. If I used the mouse and clicked on the
"go" widget, IE worked fine and google would lookup the phrase. Just could
not press return. I also discovered that if I actually typed in the phrase
(not just copied and pasted) that IE would work fine, causing google to look
up the phrase when I pressed the return key. Just could not press return on
a pasted phrase.

Any ideas? Seems I will have to uninstall OE. If I unininatall, will my
address book and inbox & saved email be preserved?
